Jennifer… my husband reminded me of that AFTER I had already made this 😉 its down the ethnic isle and it's called Haupia. Have you seen it made by Jello?

@JulieRogers I love it when people share my stuff! Thanks!

@Starveit What a great idea! I am glad it worked in your machine! Thanks for sharing!

Also another tip: Use the clear Jello and add a can of condensed milk and it will come out white. It is also very tasty with Jello. It will taste like the Vietnamese deserts.

Do you think sparkling water would work instead of soda? Or does the sugar in the soda maybe help it set differently.

Have you ever tried it with sugar free jello and diet soda? I wonder if it would work as well. I think I will try it and see.

I haven’t tried it with diet soda and sugar free jello, but I don’t think it would make much of a difference. It sets up because of the gelatin and water content.

I think the carbonation in the pop makes it easier to scrape up. If you used juice or water, I don’t think it would have the same texture or zing. Good question.

I love how the red shaved ice looks! My husband and I are wanting to buy a shaved ice machine and we wanted to know some recipes before we make any. I’ll have to look into using this recipe for when we get our machine!

Most recipes that will freeze really hard & icy are spun on the sorbet setting. I’d also set the pint container in warm water for a few minutes (10 or so) before spinning. This seems to work best according to different FB groups.

Could you maybe do this with lemonade instead of sprite? Would it still taste good? Also, after it freezes do you taste the fizz of the sprite?

        • Tips From a Typical Mom says

You could use lemonade, but I think it might freeze so solid that you wouldn’t be able to “scrape” it like you can with the Sprite. I’m pretty sure the carbonation in the Sprite make it easy to scrape.
