Candy Cane Hearts Edible Christmas Ornaments Tutorial

12/13/13 | Christmas, Desserts and Treats, Holidays, Kids Crafts and Coloring, Recipes

I saw these a few years ago in a Family Fun magazine, I think.  I just loved them and I have used them for Christmas and Valentines day ever since.  I’ve made suckers out of them using sucker sticks.  This year I have been brainstorming homemade ornaments and I thought, why not add some string so they can hang from the tree?  And the Candy Cane Hearts Edible Ornament was born!

These are so easy to make, you’ll love it.  I also used these for a cookie exchange party instead of real cookies and they were a hit.  I didn’t feel like making cookies that day, and this was an easy substitute.

What you’ll need:
-1 or 2 boxes of Mini Candy Canes (depending on how many you need to make.  My box held 60 so that would make 30 hearts if none were broken)
-1 bag white chocolate chips
-1 bag red candy melts
-1 bag green candy melts
The candy melts depend on your creativity.  You decide what colors you want to use.  I used a whole bag of white chocolate on about 20 hearts.
-Wax paper
– Thin rope or string (embroidery floss would be great!)

Open the candy canes and place on wax paper (either on your counter directly or on a baking sheet) in a heart design, as shown here:

Make a loop out of the string and tie in a knot.  Put the knot in the top inside of the heart.  I would suggest trying to get one of the strings in the front and one in the back to balance the heart as it hangs, mine fell forward a bit with both strings in the back.

Melt your choice of chocolate according to the package directions.

Add the chocolate to a zip lock bag as shown:

Snip the corner off of the zip lock bag and pipe the chocolate into the hearts.  Use a toothpick to smooth the chocolate out.

Then sprinkle with colored sugar, sprinkles or cupcake gems.  Let set, and you’re done!
