Making the Holidays Feel Fresh—Without Ditching the Mashed Potatoes

Thanksgiving can be such a beautiful day of connection and gratitude… or it can feel like a whirlwind of cooking, cleaning, and “Wait, did anyone remember to defrost the turkey?” If you’ve ever felt like the holiday is over before you really got to enjoy it, you’re not alone, mama.
That’s why I’ve put together a few simple, joyful Thanksgiving traditions your family can start this year—and keep coming back to for years to come. Even better? I’ve made some free printable goodies to help you jump in without the stress.
Why Start New Traditions?
Traditions are like glue for families. They give kids something to look forward to, create shared memories, and give us a little anchor in the chaos of everyday life. And no, they don’t have to be perfect (or even Pinterest-worthy!) to be special.
Mom Tip: Traditions are more about how they feel than how they look. Go for cozy and fun, not fancy and flawless.
Easy Thanksgiving Traditions to Try This Year
1. Thanksgiving Bucket List
Let each family member pick one or two fun fall activities to do before the big day. It’s a great way to build anticipation and sneak in some extra connection.

2. Gratitude Tree

This one’s a classic with a twist. Print out some colorful leaves, have everyone write what they’re thankful for, and tape them to the wall, a branch (see image above) or a posterboard “tree.”

3. Thanksgiving Scavenger Hunt
Before the turkey hits the table, send the kids (or the whole crew!) on a Thanksgiving-themed scavenger hunt. It’s a great way to keep little hands busy while the food finishes cooking.

4. Pie for Breakfast
Yep, I said it. Have a slice of pumpkin pie with your coffee while watching the Macy’s Parade. It’s your holiday too, mama!
5. “Thankful for You” Notes

Set out note cards and let everyone write a quick “thankful for you” message to another family member. Put them in a basket to read after dinner—it’s sweeter than dessert.
FAQs About Starting New Thanksgiving Traditions
Q: My kids are different ages—will this work for everyone?
Absolutely. You can tweak any of these traditions to fit toddlers, teens, or adults. The key is letting everyone join in their own way.
Q: How do I make time for new things when I’m already swamped?
You don’t need to do them all! Pick just one or two that sound fun and low-pressure. The point is connection, not perfection.
Q: What if it flops?
Then you have a hilarious memory to laugh about next year! Some of our favorite traditions started as “oops” moments.
You’ve Got This, Mama 💛
Holidays can feel like a lot, but they’re also full of little opportunities to create joy and connection. Start small, keep it simple, and give yourself plenty of grace.
