How to talk to your kids about School Shootings

12/14/12 | Uncategorized

My heart aches for the families of the children and staff that lost their lives today at the hand of a very sick individual.  I know those precious children and adults are now in the loving arms of our Savior and he is close to their families right now.  When I hear the news, I was teaching my preschool class.  I wanted to immediately go to my children’s school and pick up my kids and hold them for the rest of the day.  I know they have probably not heard about this yet, but what do I say when they ask me about it?  I know their friends will be talking about it on Monday.  I hope their teachers are practicing lock down all day long.  When are our schools going to go back to metal detectors and one door to enter through the office?

Anyway, I saw this blog post written by an educated School Counselor, and I thought it had some great tips on how to talk to your children about school shootings.  And also questions to ask yourself about how ready they are to hear it.

Let’s all pray for the victims and their families and hold our children closer to us always and never let them go away from us unhappy or feeling unloved.

“For behold the Lord receiveth them up unto himself, in glory; and he doth suffer that they may do this thing, or that the people may do this thing unto them, according to the hardness of their hearts, that the judgments which he shall exercise upon them in his wrath may be just; and the blood of the innocent shall stand as a witness against them, yea, and cry mightily against them at the last day.” Alma 14:11
