6 Tips for Getting Your Kids to Drink More Water

Getting our kids to drink more water is an ongoing battle.

We all know that water is the healthiest drink we can give to your kids (and ourselves) but getting them to like water when they know that there are alternatives out there, makes it hard. They would rather drink chocolate milk and soda than water. So today I’ve gathered some of the tips, tricks and products that I have used to get my kids to drink more water.

“More than half of all children and adolescents in the U.S. are not getting enough hydration—probably because they’re not drinking enough water—a situation that could have significant repercussions for their physical health and their cognitive and emotional functioning.” The first national study of its kind from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

So if our kids are not drinking enough water it will affect their cognitive and emotional well being? Good to know!

6 Tips for Getting Your Kids to Drink More Water

How to Get Your Kids to Drink More Water in the Summer:

1. Make it fun! We are always on the lookout for new toys and products that will actually benefit our children. Technology has blessed everyone’s lives for the better. As long as it’s used in moderation. So today I want to share with you one of my all time favorite water bottles for kids. It’s called Gululu and it’s one of the most brilliant ideas I’ve seen in a long time. Remember those old “electronic pets” that the kids were obsessed over? Well, this interactive smart water bottle incorporates an electronic pet right into the water bottle.

The bottle actually has a screen! It helps our kids develop healthy habits that will last a lifetime. The bottle measures and rewards healthy hydration habits. The animated pets and engaging stories help keep the kids entertained and coming back for more. The kids can choose from a bunch of virtual pets which each have their own personality and story. These pets grow and evolve as your child drinks water.

What’s even more cool is that if your child’s friend has a Gululu, they can connect to each other and play together. These water bottles encourage my kids to drink water instead of me nagging all day long.

We love to take our Gululu out for “field trips” in the summer to keep the kids hydrated when it’s so hot outside. We take it to the pool, the beach, the lake, the park and when school starts, they will take it to school too. There is a school mode so the bottle is not distracting during those hours. The bottle keeps track of how much water your child has drunk using sensors inside the bottle. And when your child get’s home and it connects to WiFi, it will update the information to the cloud based app so you can see the progress your child has made.

I love the fact that I can take the bottle completely apart to hand wash it. This makes me feel better because I know that some water bottles can harbor bacteria.

6 Tips for Getting Your Kids to Drink More Water

2. Make water easily accessible. Make sure your kids can reach the faucet or water dispenser in your fridge themselves. Get a cute stepping stool if they can’t quite reach the faucet. Kids love to be independent and if you make a really big deal out of how “big” they are, they will love it and want to do it over and over again.
3. Make water fun. If you add some fruit to your child’s water to “flavor” it they will think it’s fun and will most likely drink more. The fruit also gives the water that slight sweet taste so they will drink more.

4. Keep it cold. I don’t know about you but I hate drinking water that is warm. I am way more likely to drink water that has ice in it, especially in the summer. My kids are the same way. So we use fun ice trays that have shapes or the reusable ice cubes to keep the kids water nice and cold all day long. The Gululu is great for keeping the water cold because it’s insulated.
5. Serve only water with meals. When you are eating a meal it’s natural to need drinks every once in awhile, so since your child will be drinking anyway, be sure that water is the choice.

6. Bring water with you. When you are leaving the house have your kids grab their water bottles. I can’t tell you how many times we have forgotten and my kids were “dying of thirst”! When they are really thirsty, that’s the best time to give them their water. They’ll drink it even if they don’t like it.

There are my 6 tips for getting your kids to drink more water in the summer. What would you add to this list? What are your tricks?

Don’t forget to be a water role model yourself. Be sure you are drinking your 8-8oz. cups of water each and every day too. Your kids look up to you and will model what you show them.

Both my kids and I need to be better at drinking water. I think I need to invest in more ice cube trays as we’re constantly running out and you’re right–they like it cold better.
